Porcelain paving has become the most requested patio material across Cheshire over the past decade, and for good reason — but it’s also the material most likely to be installed badly, because its installation demands more precision than the finished slab lets on. Here’s what proper installation actually involves.
Excavation and Clay Removal
Before any sub-base work begins, topsoil and soft clay have to be excavated down to a firm, stable layer. This point isn’t negotiable: building a sub-base on soft or plastic clay produces uneven settlement later, regardless of how well the layers above it are built. Across Cheshire gardens, the depth to a genuinely stable bearing layer varies considerably — shallow on some sites, significantly deeper on others, particularly where there’s been previous garden construction, root disturbance from mature trees, or filled ground from earlier building work.
Sub-Base Depth on Clay
A standard residential sub-base specification of 100-150mm of compacted MOT Type 1 is adequate on free-draining ground. On Cheshire’s heavier clay, the depth typically needs to sit toward the upper end of that range, and sometimes deeper still on particularly active, shrinkable clay — the additional depth spreads the structural load more broadly and creates a platform less susceptible to seasonal movement.
Clay shrinks in dry conditions and swells when wet, and over a year that movement can run to several millimetres — enough to crack rigid jointing compounds and cause lippage between adjacent slabs if the sub-base beneath them is inadequate. On sites with particularly active clay, a geogrid reinforcement layer within the sub-base adds bearing capacity and reduces the risk of uneven settlement across a large patio area.
Compaction has to happen in layers of roughly 75mm using a vibrating plate compactor — compacting the full depth in one pass leaves the lower layers loose, and they settle under load later regardless of how solid the surface looks on the day. Any soft spots found during compaction need to be dug out and properly consolidated before building back up.
Total excavation depth for a typical porcelain patio on Cheshire clay comes to roughly 250mm once you add it up: around 20mm of porcelain slab, 30-50mm of mortar bed, and 180-200mm of compacted sub-base beneath it. That’s deeper than most homeowners expect, and it’s a large part of why a properly installed porcelain patio costs more than a surface-level price comparison suggests.
Priming: The Step Cheap Quotes Skip
Porcelain’s dense, low-absorption surface won’t bond reliably to a traditional mortar bed on its own — the back of every slab needs a priming slurry applied before bedding, giving the mortar something to genuinely grip rather than sitting against a surface it can’t properly key into. Skip this step, and slabs lift or crack under normal use within a year or two, however good the sub-base underneath them is. It’s an easy step to leave out of a quote because it adds time and material cost without changing what the finished patio looks like on handover day — which is exactly why it’s worth asking about directly.
Drainage Design for North West Rainfall
Because porcelain doesn’t absorb water, every drop of rain that lands on it has to be actively managed rather than left to soak away — and on Cheshire’s clay, it often can’t reliably soak away through the sub-base either. A clear drainage strategy — falls built into the sub-base and carried through to the finished surface, channel drains or discharge points where needed — isn’t optional on a porcelain installation. It’s the difference between a patio that sheds water cleanly through a wet winter and one that puddles at the first proper downpour.
Getting It Right the First Time
Porcelain rewards proper installation and punishes shortcuts more visibly than almost any other paving material — a badly bedded slab cracks, a poorly primed one lifts, and a patio without proper falls puddles within its first winter. Done properly, it’s genuinely low-maintenance for decades.
