Mereside Road backs onto some of the trickiest ground we deal with locally — genuinely steep, right on our own doorstep in Knutsford — and this project is a good demonstration of what thirty years of experience with exactly this kind of slope actually buys a client.
The Challenge
A sloping garden isn’t just a design inconvenience — it’s a structural problem wearing a design problem’s clothes. Water runs downhill and pools wherever the grading stops it, planting struggles to establish on an unstabilised bank, and any hard landscaping needs proper engineering underneath it or it simply slides. Mereside Road’s garden had all three issues at once, on a gradient steep enough to rule out the simplest fixes.
Our Professional Approach
We started, as we always do on a difficult slope, with the ground rather than the planting scheme — understanding exactly how water moved across the site, where the stable and unstable sections of the bank were, and what level changes would actually be needed to make the garden usable rather than just less steep. From there, the design broke the slope into managed sections rather than trying to flatten the whole plot in one uniform gesture.
Retaining structures went in where the gradient needed genuine holding back, with drainage designed behind them rather than left to find its own way through — the same principle behind every retaining wall we build, because a wall without drainage is a wall storing up a problem for its first wet winter. Planting on the steeper sections was chosen specifically for root systems that help stabilise a bank, rather than picked for looks alone and left to struggle.
