Most of the gardens we build lean into Cheshire’s own character — sandstone, clay, native planting. Longfields Farm was a deliberate exception: a client who wanted a genuinely Moroccan-inspired garden, built to work in a Cheshire climate rather than fight it.
A Lovely Setting
Longfields Farm gave us a generous, sheltered plot to work with — the kind of setting that can carry a bold design idea without it looking out of place. The client’s brief was clear from the start: warmth, colour and the atmosphere of a Moroccan courtyard, translated into a working Cheshire garden rather than a pastiche of one.
Moroccan Garden Ideas, Built for Our Climate
A genuine Moroccan garden leans on a handful of ideas that translate well here with the right materials: warm-toned paving and walling rather than cold grey stone, structured planting in raised beds and pots rather than sprawling borders, and strong geometric lines softened by planting rather than lost in it. We used mosaic-style detailing and warm sandstone tones to bring that character in, built on the same properly engineered sub-bases we’d use for any Cheshire patio — the aesthetic changes, the groundwork underneath it doesn’t.
Integration With the Farm Setting
Rather than fighting the working farm context around it, the design leaned into it. Imagine rows of potted citrus trees and date palms adding to the authenticity of the Moroccan feel, while also giving the possibility of fresh produce nearby — a nice link between the ornamental garden and the practical land around it. Structured planting beds and warm-toned hard landscaping created a defined garden “room” within the wider farm setting, rather than trying to make the whole plot feel Moroccan at once.
Why Climate-Appropriate Choices Matter
The genuine risk with a themed garden like this is plants and materials that look right in a brochure and fail within a season in the North West. Citrus and palms need to be container-grown here so they can be moved under cover through winter rather than planted straight into Cheshire clay; paving needs the same frost-resistant specification we’d use on any patio, whatever tone it’s laid in. The Moroccan character comes from colour, pattern and planting choices layered onto a build that’s engineered exactly the same way as everything else we do.
Sourcing the Right Materials Locally
A genuinely Moroccan-feeling garden depends on getting the warm tones right, and that meant being selective about where the paving and walling stone came from rather than taking whatever a standard supplier catalogue offered. We sourced sandstone with the right depth of colour and mosaic-style detailing pieces specifically for their warmth under Cheshire’s cooler, greyer light, since a tone that reads as rich and sun-baked in a Moroccan courtyard can look flat and cold here if it’s chosen for the photograph rather than for how it actually performs under our sky.
The Result
Longfields Farm now has a genuinely distinctive garden space — warm, textured, and unmistakably different from the gardens around it, without any of the maintenance headaches a less climate-aware version of the same idea would have created. It’s proof that a strong design idea and Cheshire’s weather aren’t automatically at odds, provided the groundwork and material choices respect where the garden actually is, rather than simply copying a look that belongs somewhere hotter and drier onto ground that will never behave the same way.
