Some of our favourite reviews are the ones that describe exactly what a garden looked like before we arrived. This Chestnut Drive, Congleton project has one of the best.
Before: A Weed-Ridden Lawn and an Uneven Concrete Patio
In the client’s own words, from their five-star Google review: “Before work commenced we were living with a weed ridden lawn, and an ugly uneven concrete slab patio. Over the course of a month, Jason stripped everything back to a blank canvas and transformed it into a beautiful outside living space.”
That’s the honest starting point for most of the gardens we take on — not a disaster, just a space that had stopped working for the people living in it. A tired lawn, cracked slabs, and a garden that nobody wanted to spend time in.
Engineering First
Before anything visible went in, we dealt with what was underneath. The old concrete patio came out completely rather than being patched or paved over, and drainage was re-run from the downpipes into a new gully system tied into the existing soil drainage — the copper-coloured pipework you can see mid-project below. On Cheshire clay, skipping this step is exactly how a “new” patio ends up sitting in a puddle by its second winter.
The garden also needed proper groundworks for a bespoke garden room — a fully engineered base rather than a shed plonked on a few slabs, since a structure that size carries real weight and needs to stay level for decades, not just for the first summer.
What We Built
The finished garden centres on a bespoke black-clad garden room with full-height glazed doors — a proper year-round space, not a glorified shed — set on a new porcelain patio that runs the width of the plot. A fresh lawn replaced the weed-ridden grass, edged cleanly against raised planted borders, with potted planting used to soften the garden room’s base and bring it into the rest of the garden rather than leaving it looking bolted on.
It took the better part of a month on site — clearance and demolition, then drainage and groundworks, then the garden room base, patio, lawn and planting in sequence. That’s the process for most full garden makeovers of this scale: the parts nobody photographs take the longest, and they’re the reason the finished garden still looks right five winters later.
The Result
The client’s review says it best: a blank canvas transformed into a beautiful outside living space, with photos in their own review showing the finished garden room, patio and lawn from multiple angles. It’s the kind of project where the “after” isn’t just prettier than the “before” — it’s a completely different way of using the garden, from a space nobody sat in to one built specifically for spending evenings in, whatever the weather is doing outside the glazed doors.
